What makes IMPACT Autism special is that our student leaders motivate fellow undergraduate students as well as professors, parents, and community members to come together for the common cause of IMPACTing the lives of those affected by autism spectrum disorders. Through the leadership of our Officer Team, we are able to coordinate many projects to serve our community. Those projects include our Project Communicate grant, an Autism Awareness Movie Night, Autism Symposium in the Swamp, and our most recent project, Stomp the Swamp for Autism.
"I love you." Those three, powerful words are the ones some parents of children with autism who are unable to communicate long to hear from their children. In 2011, IMPACT Autism's Project Communicate supported six local families by providing them with a range of AAC devices for their child. AAC devices ranged from flashcards with pictures to iPads that with proper training and "apps" can unlock children from the silence their condition may bring. IMPACT Autism was able to complete this grant project after a year and a half of fundraising activities.
Also in 2011, IMPACT Autism hosted UF's first Autism Awareness Movie Night, in honor of Autism Awareness Month in April. Showcasing HBO's movie Temple Grandin, IMPACT was able to raise autism awareness and start a conversation about the condition on UF's campus.
In 2012, IMPACT Autism is planning the first annual Autism Symposium in the Swamp. The event, scheduled for April 20, 2012, will feature an interdisciplinary team of local autism experts including an applied behavior analylst, neuropsychologist, medical doctor, speech therapist, and special educators.
From 2012-2013, IMPACT Autism is coordinating UF's second Autism Symposium in the Swamp happening in April 2013, as well as Stomp the Swamp for Autism happening on February 9, 2013. Stomp the Swamp for Autism is UF's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities largest fundraiser, and this year is the fifth anniversary of this special and fun fitness event! We hope you will join us!
